Browsing a room in Kip Haus: a full-screen photo, $330 a week paid every 2 weeks, and 0.3 km from your pin.

Every rental site starts by asking which suburb. That is a hard question in a city you have not moved to yet, and an impossible one in a country you have not landed in.

How to find a share house in Australia

1. Drop a pin on any suburb

Anywhere in Australia — Newtown, Fitzroy, Bicton, a regional town no site bothers with. Then choose how far around it to look: 2 km if you want to walk, 50 km if you are still deciding.

2. Go through rooms one at a time

One room fills the screen. Swipe up for the next, sideways for more photos. Weekly rent, bond, bills and how far it is from your pin — before you have to ask anyone anything.

3. Message the host directly

When one is worth asking about, send a message. No forms, no application, no fee — a six-digit code to your email is the whole sign-up.

Search Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth from anywhere

Passport moves your search to any point in the country. Line a room up from another state or another continent, and arrive with somewhere to sleep already sorted.

  • Any suburb, any time. Drag the map, or type a postcode.
  • A radius you choose. From 2 km to 100 km, drawn on the map so you can see exactly what you are searching.
  • Real distance. Every room says how far it is from your pin, not from the city centre.

Rental bond scams, interrupted

People renting sight-unseen are the most targeted renters in the country. Kip Haus cannot promise there are no scammers — nobody can — so it does the next thing: it watches for the pattern and says something.

  • Scam Shield reads incoming messages and warns you the moment money is asked for before an inspection.
  • Report or block from any listing and any chat, in two taps.
  • Never a bond before you look. Ask for a live video walk-through — the app reminds you.

Renting out a spare room? List it free

A listing takes two things: what you want per week, and a pin on the map. Everything else is optional, and you can add it later.

  • Free. No listing fee, no commission, no upgrade.
  • Say what is true. Own bathroom or shared, bond in weeks, which bills are in the rent — or say nothing, and the app says nothing.
  • Mark it rented the day you find someone, and the messages stop.

What a listing needs

  1. Rent per week — and whether it is paid weekly or fortnightly.
  2. A pin on the map — the suburb, and roughly where in it.
  3. One photo of the room.

Bond, bills, bathroom and who already lives there are optional. Leave one out and the room says so, rather than letting anyone guess.

Every state and territory

The search itself is a circle around wherever you put the pin, so a capital city and a town of four thousand people work exactly the same way. The city pages below explain what is different about renting a room in each state — who holds your bond, and what you are entitled to if your name is not on the lease.

Renting a room in Australia: what people ask first

Can I find a room in Australia before I arrive?

Yes. Kip Haus has a feature called Passport: drop a pin on any suburb in Australia from wherever you are in the world, choose how far around it to search, and browse the rooms inside that circle. You can line a room up and message the host weeks before your flight.

What is the difference between a share house, a flatshare and a room for rent?

In Australia they usually mean the same thing: you rent one bedroom in a house or flat and share the kitchen, bathroom and living room with the people already there. “Flatmate” and “housemate” are the words people use for each other; “flatshare”, “houseshare” and “share accommodation” are what listing sites call the category. Kip Haus lists rooms inside existing households — one room at a time, not whole properties.

Is Kip Haus free?

Yes. Browsing is free, listing a room is free, and messaging a host is free. No listing fee, no commission, nothing to upgrade to.

How do I avoid a rental bond scam in Australia?

Never pay a bond or a holding deposit before you have seen the room, in person or on a live video walk-through. Be suspicious of anyone who says somebody else is interested and asks you to transfer money today, or who wants to move the conversation to WhatsApp and be paid by PayID, Osko, wire transfer, gift cards or crypto. Kip Haus reads incoming messages for those patterns and warns you inside the chat.

How is rent paid for a share house in Australia?

Rent is quoted per week and usually paid weekly or fortnightly, not monthly. A bond is often asked for, commonly four weeks. Some rooms include electricity, gas, water and internet in the rent and some do not. Kip Haus shows all of that on the room — and says plainly when the host has not stated it, instead of letting you assume.

Do I need a visa or an Australian bank account to use it?

No. Kip Haus is for anyone arriving on any visa — work, study or working holiday — and for people already here moving across town or interstate. Signing up is a six-digit code emailed to you. No passwords, no documents.

Which cities and towns does it cover?

All of Australia. The search is a radius around wherever you put the pin, so Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Darwin, Canberra, the Gold Coast and a regional town nobody has heard of all work exactly the same way.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet. Kip Haus is an iPhone app today, iOS 16.4 or later. There is no Android app and no web app — when that changes it will be announced here first.
