Mount Gambier is ten minutes across by car, so the suburb you pick barely matters. The choice that does matter is whether you live in the streets or out on a block past the town boundary.

In the streets, or out on a block
One road runs through the whole town. It is the Riddoch Highway, called Penola Road on the way north and Bay Road on the way south, and the Jubilee Highway crosses it east to west. Learn those two and you have the map. From the Blue Lake at the southern edge to the far end of Penola Road is about ten minutes by car, and the streets around Commercial Street are genuinely walkable.
So the suburb is not the decision. The decision is whether your address is in the streets or past the town boundary. In the streets you have the LinkSA town loops — three of them, weekdays, out of Ferrers Street opposite Coles, from about nine in the morning until late afternoon — and a bike will do the rest. Out at Compton, Yahl, Glenburnie or Moorak you are on a farm or a block, the loop does not come, and you drive.
Where your work is usually answers it for you
More people here work in sawmilling and timber dressing than in anything else, by a clear margin. The pine plantations of the Green Triangle come right up to the edge of town, and the mills and haulage yards sit out along the Jubilee Highway. The hospital and the schools are the other big employers and they are in town, which is why so many new arrivals — nurses, teachers, tradespeople on a posting — end up in the older share houses near the centre.
The seasonal work is all out of town and people drive to it. Vintage in the Coonawarra is about forty-five minutes north past Penola, running through autumn, with pruning through the cold months. Port MacDonnell, half an hour south, is the rock lobster port. If that is what you have come for, a block on the right side of town saves you the same drive twice a day.
The part of the answer that only shows up in July
It is genuinely cold here by Australian standards, and most of the rain falls in the months you notice it. So whichever way you answer the question, ask how the room is heated and who pays for it. A big old limestone place is lovely in February and expensive in July, and the heating often reaches the lounge and not the bedroom.
Rooms come up in ones and twos rather than in waves, so the shape of the year is worth knowing. The hospital, the schools and TAFE take new people on around the start of the year, and vintage pulls people in again in early autumn.
Where people look in Mount Gambier
The centre
Commercial Street East and West, Sturt Street, Ferrers Street, Crouch Street
The only part of town where not running a car is a real option, and the big limestone places near the CBD divide into rooms easily, so this is where most of the share housing sits.
West
Mount Gambier West, around Wireless Road West and the Budinya precinct
Flat, gridded and quiet, with the sports grounds on this side, and it is a short level ride into Commercial Street West — which is why it suits people who would rather cycle than run a car.
North
Penola Road, Tumut Drive, Barwon Crescent, Suttontown
The newer estates are up this end along with the Marketplace centre and the airport, so it is handy if you fly to Adelaide or Melbourne for work, but the town loop thins out and nearly everyone drives.
South, around the lakes
Lake Terrace East and West, Pick Avenue, Newton Crescent, Square Mile, Moorak
Houses back onto the crater reserve here, so you can walk the lake circuit from the front door, and the Blue Lake turns turquoise around November and fades back to a duller blue by March. Square Mile sits just beyond the crater on the southern edge, about five minutes further out.
East and out to the border
Mount Gambier East, Glenburnie, Yahl
The Jubilee Highway runs this way past the mills and the Glenburnie industrial area, and the Victorian border is about fifteen minutes out of town, a few minutes past Glenburnie, where the clocks are half an hour ahead of yours.

It is on the southern edge, just past the crater, about five minutes further out than Lake Terrace. Half the addresses worth looking at here read like separate towns — Square Mile, Compton, Moorak, Yahl — and most of them are minutes from Commercial Street. Put an address on a map before you rule it out.
What time do the town buses stop running in Mount Gambier?
Late afternoon. LinkSA runs three town loops on weekdays out of Ferrers Street, opposite Coles, from about nine in the morning, with regional routes out to the smaller towns as well. There is nothing much at night or on weekends, so if you are not driving, ask how far the house is from a loop stop. The council keeps free bikes at the library and the visitor centre if you want to test the ride first.
How cold does Mount Gambier get in winter?
Cold and wet by Australian standards — around 700 mm of rain a year, most of it through the colder months. That makes heating a real cost rather than a detail. Ask how the bedroom itself is heated, and whether power is inside the weekly rent or split with the bills.
How far is the Victorian border from Mount Gambier?
About fifteen minutes east along the Jubilee Highway, a few minutes past Glenburnie. Clocks on the other side run half an hour ahead, which is worth knowing if you work, study or have family across in the south-west of Victoria.
