Most people who take a room in Adelaide came for one of a few things: a hospital job, a shipyard contract, a campus, or a season in the vineyards. Which of those fills a house tells you more than the suburb name.

Who takes the rooms: the shipyard, the wards, the campuses
Adelaide has no single industry filling its share houses. Osborne, out past Port Adelaide, brings in welders, fitters and engineers on contracts that run for years, and many arrive from interstate with a toolbox and nothing else. The hospitals take the next slice. The Royal Adelaide sits at the west end of North Terrace, the Women's and Children's is up in North Adelaide, Flinders Medical Centre is out at Bedford Park, and all of them run on shifts around the clock.
The universities refill the inner suburbs every February, two campuses on North Terrace and one at Bedford Park. Around the edges are people who came for a vintage in the Hills or the Barossa, or a few weeks of festival work, and never quite got around to leaving. In a city this size all of them end up in the same houses.
What shift work and old stone do to a house
A house with a nurse in it runs differently. Somebody is asleep in the middle of the day, somebody else leaves at half past five in the morning, and the house has quietly agreed on rules about the hallway. Ask who is on nights before you take the front bedroom, and ask about parking, because a shift worker with a car is not catching a bus home at midnight.
Then ask about the building. Much of the older stock is single-fronted stone with thick walls and high ceilings, which holds up through a February heatwave and turns cold in July. Find out what the cooling actually is: ducted through the house, or one split system in the lounge with three bedroom doors shut against it. Ask the same about heating, and how the power bill gets split.
- Port and shipyard work. The train from Port Adelaide reaches the city in about twenty minutes, so people on Osborne contracts often live back along that line rather than right beside the yard.
- The north-east. Buses join the O-Bahn guideway near Hackney and run out to Tea Tree Plaza without meeting a traffic light, which keeps houses out that way closer than the map suggests.
- The coast. One tram line runs from the city through Plympton to Moseley Square at Glenelg. A bank card, a phone or a metroCARD taps on for trains, trams and buses, and one tap covers two hours including transfers.
The weeks when everyone arrives at once
The Adelaide year has a shape. It tightens from late January into March, when semester starts, vintage crews turn up, and the Fringe, the Festival and WOMADelaide land on top of each other. Locals call it Mad March. Winter is slower, and nobody is competing with you for a spare room.
Distance is not the problem it would be in a bigger city. The grid sits inside a ring of parklands, so the first suburbs start about a kilometre and a half out, and ten kilometres from Victoria Square reaches the sand at Henley, the foot of the Hills at Burnside, and most of the way to Port Adelaide.
Where people look in Adelaide
Inner east
Norwood, Kent Town, Stepney, Kensington
The Parade keeps hospitality workers who want to walk home after a late shift, and the older stone houses behind it hold more bedrooms than their frontage suggests.
Inner north and north-west
Prospect, Bowden, Croydon, Thebarton
Bowden is a former industrial pocket rebuilt around its own train station, so it draws people who wanted something newer and denser this close to the middle.
The coast
Glenelg, Henley Beach, Grange, Semaphore, Largs Bay
Glenelg has the tram, Grange and Largs Bay sit on train lines, and Semaphore is buses plus a walk inland to Glanville station. Houses here suit people who will trade a longer run into town for the water.
Inner south
Unley, Goodwood, Parkside, Clarence Park
It is flat the whole way in from here, which is why the bikes in the hallway usually outnumber the cars in the driveway.
The Port
Port Adelaide, Alberton, Rosewater, Osborne
Shipbuilding at Osborne pulls a steady stream of trades and engineers into this corner, and the train still reaches the city in about twenty minutes.
The Hills
Stirling, Aldgate, Crafers, Blackwood
A few degrees cooler and properly dark at night. Most houses up here assume whoever moves in drives, so the rooms tend to go to people who already have a car.

What is Mad March in Adelaide and does it make finding a room harder?
Mad March is the stretch when the Fringe, the Festival and WOMADelaide run over the top of each other and the city is at its fullest. It lands right after semester starts, so more people are looking at the same time. If you can arrive in winter instead, you get more time to think about a house before you say yes to it.
I'm working at Osborne, should I live near the Port or in the city?
Plenty of people on shipyard contracts live back along the Port line rather than right beside the yard, because the train runs into the city in about twenty minutes and the rest of their life is at that end. If your roster starts early, driving in from the inner north-west is short, and parking at the Port end of town is not the ordeal it is in a bigger city.
Do Adelaide share houses have air conditioning?
Ask what is actually in the house rather than whether it has aircon. A lot of the older stone places have one split system in the lounge and nothing in the bedrooms, which is fine most of the year and a long night in February. Ask who pays the power bill and how it gets divided, because summer is when that arrangement starts to matter.
Is it better to live near Flinders at Bedford Park or in the city and commute?
Both work, and it comes down to where the rest of your week is. Bedford Park sits south of the city with the Tonsley line running out that way, so people who want the campus and Flinders Medical Centre within a walk stay close, and people who want the city at night live further in and ride the line out in the morning.
