Five lines, and what sits along each one

The rail map is the fastest way to understand this city. The Yanchep line runs north beside the freeway, and plenty of people still call it the Joondalup line. The Mandurah line runs south the same way, a bit under an hour end to end. The older lines head east to Midland and west to Fremantle, about half an hour to the port, and a short Airport line branches off to Redcliffe and High Wycombe.

Close in on the northern side sit Northbridge, Highgate, Mount Lawley, Leederville and North Perth: old brick and weatherboard houses that divide easily into four or five rooms, close enough to walk home from William Street or Beaufort Street instead of waiting on a night bus. Across the water, Victoria Park, East Victoria Park, South Perth and Como have the Causeway, which puts you in town quicker than some northern suburbs five kilometres nearer. Albany Highway is where people on that side actually eat.

At the far end of the western line, Fremantle works as its own town, with its own port, market and pace. South Fremantle, North Fremantle, Beaconsfield and Hamilton Hill sit around it, and people who move there often stop going into Perth altogether.

Distance behaves oddly in a place this shape. Twenty-five kilometres out with a station at the end of your street is an easy run in. Five kilometres out on the wrong side of the freeway can be worse. Since January 2026 one fare covers three hours anywhere on Transperth, so the long line costs no more than the short one.

Where the line stops short of the coast

The coast north of the city is the clear example. Scarborough, Trigg, North Beach, Karrinyup and Stirling put you in the water within minutes, but the rail line sits a few kilometres inland, so a house out there quietly assumes someone drives. Buses connect the beach suburbs back to the stations, though the timetable matters more than the map here.

The western suburbs run on the same logic for different reasons. Subiaco, Shenton Park, Wembley, Jolimont and Nedlands are leafier and dearer, and the big hospitals sit on that side, so shift workers look there before anywhere else. Summer here is long, dry and properly hot, and most afternoons the sea breeze everyone calls the Fremantle Doctor arrives off the coast around three, which decides whether a west-facing room is bearable.

Rosters, early flights and the airport side

Plenty of Perth works a roster: two or three weeks in the Pilbara or the Goldfields, then a week at home. A housemate who is away half the month is ordinary here, not a sign something is off. The streets near the terminals fill with people who mainly want a quiet bed and a short drive, which is Belmont, Redcliffe, High Wycombe, Cloverdale and Ascot.

Redcliffe and High Wycombe have stations on the Airport line, and Belmont, Cloverdale and Ascot are a short bus or walk from Redcliffe. Weekday trains start around 5am, so anything but a pre-dawn flight you can do by rail.
