Nobody arrives in Mildura by accident
People land here from Melbourne or Adelaide for a reason, and it is usually the same one. The money goes further and the day is shorter: a room in the middle of town costs what a room a long way out of a capital costs, work tends to be ten minutes away rather than an hour, and the river is at the end of the street. Mildura sits in the top left corner of Victoria, closer to Adelaide than to Melbourne, and that distance is the whole bargain.
What you give up is easy exits and choice. There is no passenger train — the line carries freight only, so V/Line runs coaches that connect to trains further south, and Melbourne takes most of a day. Flying is what most people do. The airport is about seven kilometres south-west, the busiest regional one in Victoria, with direct flights to Melbourne and Sydney. On the ground there is one base hospital, one strip of shops and restaurants along Langtree Avenue, and a summer that is long and properly hot. People who stay decide that is a fair swap. People who leave usually say it was the distance, not the town.
An address here is a street number, not a suburb
The centre is a grid: numbered streets running across it, and Deakin Avenue running about twelve kilometres south from the river. Directions come as street numbers rather than suburb names, so a room described as just off Ninth is a precise address to everyone but you. Between the river and around Fifteenth Street you are walking distance from Langtree Avenue and close to the hospital.
Past that the town turns into vine blocks fast. Irymple and Nichols Point are ten minutes out. Merbein and Red Cliffs are proper little towns with their own main streets, fifteen to twenty minutes away, and rooms out there are usually cheaper. Buronga is five minutes over the bridge and Gol Gol about ten, both in New South Wales — same drive to work, different state's paperwork. The ground is dead flat, so a bike covers the grid and the riverfront without effort, but past the centre a car is more or less assumed. Ask early whether a room comes with somewhere to park.
Come before Christmas, or come in October
How hard the search is has less to do with the calendar than with what is being picked. The region grows most of Victoria's grapes and most of Australia's dried vine fruit, and picking starts in late summer. From about February to April the town is at its fullest, and a spare room does not sit empty for long. Citrus and winter pruning keep things ticking along through the middle of the year.
If you are coming for the grape season, start looking before Christmas rather than after it. If the timing is yours to pick, October and November are the slack weeks. Either way, walk through the house before you send anyone money, or at least have someone carry a phone through it while you watch.
- February to April. Table grapes, dried fruit and vintage land at once, and this is the hardest stretch to arrive cold.
- May to September. Citrus picking and winter pruning keep the town steady, without the February crush.
- October and November. The quiet window, and the easiest time to move if you get to choose.

These are working vine and citrus blocks rather than suburbs, so houses sit far apart and the nearest milk is a drive away.
The outer towns
Red Cliffs, Merbein, Birdwoodton
Red Cliffs and Merbein each have their own main street, pub and school, and Birdwoodton sits a few kilometres south of Merbein, so people out here come into Mildura mainly for work or the big shop.
Across the river
Gol Gol, Buronga, Wentworth (NSW)
Buronga is five minutes over the bridge and Gol Gol about ten; Wentworth is a half-hour drive west. All three are in New South Wales, which changes your number plates and which state's paperwork you are on.
