Bendigo's year has a rhythm, and it decides how hard finding a room is. February is the crush, Easter belongs to the festival, and the cold middle of the year is when a newcomer has the most room to move.

Late January to March, when everyone lands at once
Bendigo runs on health, money and teaching, and those three keep the same calendar. Bendigo Health is the largest employer for a long way in any direction, La Trobe's campus fills for first semester in the same fortnight the hospital takes on its new staff, and Bendigo Bank has its head office in the middle of town. If you have any say in when you arrive, pick another month.
If February is the only month you have, book somewhere to sleep for a fortnight and look from there.
- February is the crush. Semester and the hospital intakes land in the same weeks, and everyone is looking at once.
- Late summer brings vineyard and orchard work in the country around Bendigo, and some of those people take a room in town for the season.
- By March it has settled. The people who were going to move have moved, and the weather is still good for walking a few streets first.
Easter belongs to the festival, then the town goes quiet
The Bendigo Easter Festival has run since 1871 and brings well over a hundred thousand people into town across three days. Every kind of bed is spoken for. It is a fine weekend to visit and a poor one to move, so if you are choosing dates, choose either side of it.
After that the town exhales. From May through August fewer households are advertising, but the ones that are will take the time to talk to you properly. Winter here is a real winter by Victorian standards: July mornings sit near four degrees and the day rarely gets past twelve. Much of the housing is double-fronted brick and weatherboard from the gold years, with high ceilings and nothing behind the plaster. Ask what heats the room you would sleep in, and who pays for it.
Bond is one month's rent, which is a month and not four weeks, and it is lodged with the Residential Tenancies Bond Authority.
Once you are not racing the calendar, pick your patch
Bendigo grew along gullies and quartz reefs rather than out from one square, so what locals call suburbs were once separate diggings. Eaglehawk, Long Gully, California Gully, Golden Square and Quarry Hill all had a name of their own long before they shared a council, and several still have their own shops, oval and pool. That keeps the distances short. Eaglehawk is about six kilometres from the Alexandra Fountain at Charing Cross, and nearly everything you would consider sits inside ten.
Buses fan out from Charing Cross and the railway station, run under contract by Christian's Bus Company and a couple of smaller operators, and myki works on them. Most stops and vehicles still carry the old PTV logo, though the timetables sit under Transport Victoria now. Weekday runs to the hospital and the campus are fine. Evenings and Sundays are thin, which is why most share houses have a car between them.
V/Line reaches Southern Cross in about two hours, with stations at Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat and Epsom, and capped regional fares keep a day in Melbourne cheap.

The streets were laid out wide enough to turn a horse team around, so the centre is flat and you can walk most of it in twenty minutes.
The hospital and campus side

Older share houses cluster here because both the hospital and La Trobe are a short ride rather than a drive.
South-west along the Calder
Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square, Maiden Gully
Kangaroo Flat has its own V/Line platform, so people who travel to Melbourne often look here instead of the centre.
The old diggings, north-west

Eaglehawk ran itself as a separate borough until 1994 and still behaves like its own town, with a community-owned cinema in the town hall and a dahlia festival each March.
North along the highway
Epsom, White Hills, Huntly, Ascot
The newest and flattest part of the city, with a station at Epsom and more recently built houses.
East and south-east
Strathfieldsaye, Junortoun, Axedale
Quieter and on bigger blocks, but the bus thins out fast and almost everyone here drives.

Is the Bendigo to melbourne train doable every day?

Most people who do it travel in two or three days a week rather than five, and those who go often tend to live near the Kangaroo Flat or Epsom platform rather than in the centre.
