Sturt Street sits on the ridge, and the west was drawn with a ruler
The centre of Ballarat stands on high ground above the gullies that made it. Sturt Street runs along that ridge, wide enough to have gardens down the middle, and the station, Bridge Mall and most of the pubs sit within a few blocks of it. West of the centre the survey took over: long straight streets on flat ground, then Lake Wendouree with its six-kilometre path, and past that the newer estates at Alfredton, Lucas and Delacombe, still heading west on the flat.
Because that half of town is flat and short, distances here are small. Most of the city sits within about six kilometres of Sturt Street, so crossing it takes a quarter of an hour by car. Much of what hires in numbers sits inside the grid as well: the two hospitals a block apart on Drummond Street, which take new nursing and allied health staff in January and February, and Federation's old School of Mines campus on Lydiard Street.
East of the centre it drops into the diggings, south it climbs
The Yarrowee rises north-east of town and runs south through it, and the gold was in the gullies that feed it. East of the centre, then, the streets stop being straight. They bend to follow the ground, the houses are older and closer together, and the walk home from town is a real climb. Sovereign Hill sits on that side of the city and takes on casual staff for the July school holidays and again over summer.
South of the centre the land simply keeps rising, through Sebastopol and Mount Clear to Mount Helen and Buninyong, where Ballarat stops being a city and turns into a village with a main street.
- There are two stations. Wendouree serves the north-west, so living out that way does not mean a trip into the centre before you board.
- Buses fan out from the Little Bridge Street interchange and you tap on with myki, the same card as the train. Most of town gets something every half hour on a weekday; evenings and Sundays are thin.
- Anything past Mount Helen or Buninyong assumes a car. Check the timetable for the actual street before you say yes to a room out that far.
Four hundred metres up, with paddocks starting at the edge
Ballarat stands about 435 metres above the sea, which is why it frosts here and why July feels longer than it does on the coast. The older weatherboards east of the centre are the cold ones. Ask what heating a house actually has, and whether bills are included, because a winter up here turns up on the gas bill.
The town also stops abruptly. The food plants are on the north side, Mars and McCain both, and the potato country begins just past the last streets east and is busy from late summer into autumn. If your work is out in that country, your side of town is settled before you start looking.

The streets facing the water are the expensive ones, but a room in the blocks behind them is often ordinary money and still a five-minute walk to the lake circuit.
The north-west
Wendouree, Invermay Park, Miners Rest
Flat, practical rather than pretty, and home to the second train station, which is the part that matters if you are going down the line often.
The old goldfields
Golden Point, Mount Pleasant, Ballarat East, Brown Hill, Canadian
Gully country. The streets run downhill towards the old diggings, one of these suburbs really is called Canadian, and the walk back up from town will warm you.
The western estates
Alfredton, Lucas, Delacombe
New-build country on the flat, so a room here is more likely to come with its own bathroom and a house that holds its heat, at the cost of needing a car.
South and up the hill
Sebastopol, Redan, Mount Clear, Mount Helen, Buninyong
The land climbs the whole way out. Sebastopol is the cheaper end with its own shops on Albert Street, and Buninyong, ten minutes further on, is a village with a main street rather than a suburb.

What's the difference between wendouree and lake wendouree?
Two different places, and ads use both names. Lake Wendouree is the quiet streets around the water itself, an easy walk from the centre. Wendouree is the suburb further north-west, flatter and more ordinary, with the big shopping centre, the industrial estates and the second train station. A room listed as Wendouree is nearly always the second one.
Can I catch the melbourne train from wendouree station?
Yes. Wendouree is the far end of the line, so a service leaving there calls at Ballarat a few minutes later and runs on to Southern Cross in roughly an hour and a half. Living in the north-west, that saves you crossing town first. Not every service runs the extra few minutes out to Wendouree, so check the timetable, and you tap on with myki, the same card as the buses.
How far is federation uni mount helen from the centre of Ballarat?
About ten kilometres south, uphill most of the way, which is fifteen to thirty minutes in a car. Buses run out there, but they thin out at night and on Sundays. The old School of Mines campus is the opposite case, sitting on Lydiard Street in the middle of town, so which campus you are at really does decide which side of Ballarat suits you.
Is Ballarat actually that cold in winter?
Colder than Melbourne, and it frosts, because the town sits about 435 metres up. It matters less than the house does, though. Old weatherboard places east of the centre can be freezing, while the newer builds out west hold their heat. Ask what heating there is, whether anyone actually runs it, and how the bills are split, because July shows up on the gas.
