April to October: the dry, and the town at its fullest
The dry season starts around April and the town fills up with it. Dive boats, tour operators and kitchens all start putting people on, and a lot of them land in the same handful of weeks. Rooms turn over quickly through April and May, and go about as fast as they appear.
By mid-June the town is as full as it gets, and it stays that way through August. Ironman weekend lands in the middle of June and the Cairns Festival runs from the end of August into the first week of September, so beds of every sort are spoken for then. James Cook University's second semester starts in late July, which is felt around Smithfield more than anywhere else.
Then the rain comes, and the town loosens off
Seasonal crews finish up through October and November and move on, and that is when the town loosens off. From about November the afternoon rain starts, heavy and short and most days, and the humidity sits over everything until around April. The stinger nets go up at the northern beaches for the same stretch, November to May.
February and March are the quietest months for arrivals, with one exception. James Cook's first semester begins in late February, so Smithfield and the streets around the campus start moving a few weeks ahead of the rest of the coast. Cyclone season runs November to the end of April. It is a normal part of the year here, and a fair thing to ask a house about.
Wherever you land, the strip is forty minutes end to end
None of this changes where you look, only how hard you have to look. Cairns is a thin ribbon between the escarpment and the water, and nothing is far out by capital-city standards. Driving the built-up strip end to end takes about forty minutes.
Buses run under TransLink, operated locally by Kinetic. Every trip is fifty cents flat, two stops or all the way to Palm Cove, and a single ticket covers two hours of transfers. You buy a paper ticket from the driver with cash or card, as there is no go card up here. A day is a dollar and a week is five. Routes fan out from the Lake Street bus station. Services thin after dark and on Sundays, so people past Smithfield or Edmonton usually end up with a car or a lift-share. Closer in it matters less, and the city is flat enough that plenty of people ride.
What you trade for all this is distance. The reef and the rainforest are half an hour away and the commute is measured in minutes, against a job market leaning on tourism, health and construction and a long way to the next city of any size. Brisbane is a flight, not a drive.
- Inner ring. Parramatta Park through to Edge Hill sits within about ten minutes of the city centre.
- Northern beaches. Trinity Beach is roughly twenty minutes up the Captain Cook Highway, Palm Cove about half an hour.
- Southern corridor. Edmonton and Gordonvale are fifteen to twenty-five minutes down the Bruce Highway.

Inner Cairns
Parramatta Park, Bungalow, Westcourt, Cairns North
The city's own waterfront is tidal mudflat rather than sand, which is why the free Esplanade Lagoon is where everyone swims.
The green inner north
Edge Hill, Whitfield, Freshwater, Stratford
These streets back onto the range, so the Botanic Gardens and the Red Arrow walking track are close enough to use before work.
Just west of town
Manunda, Manoora, Mooroobool
Some of the cheapest rooms you will find this close to the centre, on big old blocks with the main bus routes running through.
Northern beaches
Machans Beach, Holloways Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Smithfield, Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove
This is where the swimming beaches actually start, with netted enclosures through the stinger months. Smithfield sits at the highway junction as the service hub for the lot of them, with the university and the big shopping centre.
The valley
Redlynch, Brinsmead, Kanimbla
Newer houses tucked behind the city at the foot of the range, quiet and green but a fair way from a night out.
Southern corridor
Woree, White Rock, Mount Sheridan, Bentley Park, Edmonton, Gordonvale
Rooms get bigger and cheaper as you head south, and by Gordonvale the canefields start at the edge of the street.

Cairns: questions people ask before they move
Is March too early to move to Cairns for the dry season?
It is about right. Hiring for dive boats, tours and kitchens picks up from around April, so March gives you a few weeks to get set up while the town is still quiet. Leave it until June and you are arriving into the fullest part of the year.
What is the wet season actually like in a Cairns share house?
Hot and humid, with heavy rain most afternoons from about November through to April. Before you commit, ask whether the room has air-conditioning or only a ceiling fan, and how the house splits the electricity, because that is the bill that moves in the wet. Ask about airflow too, especially in a room with one window.
Can I live at Trinity Beach or Palm Cove and work nights in town?
People do it, but the trip back is twenty to thirty minutes and the late buses are thin, so a closing shift usually means a car or a lift with someone. If your work is hospitality in the city, the inner suburbs or the valley are easier on you.
Is Manunda or Manoora a bad area to rent in?
They hold some of the cheapest rooms this close to the centre, on big old blocks with the main bus routes running through, and plenty of people live there quite happily. As anywhere, walk the street once in the evening before you decide rather than judging it off a map.
