Darwin sits on a peninsula, so the whole city reads as one line: start at the Waterfront and keep walking north until the road runs out. This page follows that line, from the tip of town out to the acre blocks.

Start at the tip: the CBD and the inner ring
The walk starts at the Waterfront, on the last few hundred metres of the peninsula. The CBD is straight behind it, then Larrakeyah, The Gardens, Stuart Park and Bayview, and you are through the lot of them in twenty minutes. People pay for that. Through the build-up in October and November, a short trip to work is worth more than anything the house itself has in it.
Keep going and you are in Parap and Fannie Bay, five minutes on. A lot of the houses here stand on steel legs with the living space upstairs and the car, the bikes and the washing line underneath. Where that underneath has been closed in, the room down there is usually the cheapest bed in the house. Parap market fills the shopping centre car park every Saturday morning, which is how half the inner ring knows the other half.
North up the coast to Casuarina
Past Ludmilla the suburbs follow the coast and the walk gets easy. Coconut Grove, Nightcliff, Rapid Creek, Millner, Alawa, Nakara, then Casuarina, about 14 km from where you started, with the big shopping centre and the northern suburbs bus interchange. Leanyer and Karama sit in behind it, off the water.
This is the flat part of Darwin and the foreshore path runs most of it, so a bike goes further than you would think. The sea is mainly for looking at. People swim at the Nightcliff and Casuarina pools, at Lake Alexander, or in the lagoons down at the Waterfront. At sunset the whole strip is out on the grass, and on Sunday mornings the market takes over the Nightcliff end.
Where the walk turns into a drive
The peninsula runs out past Lee Point, and everything after that is a car or a timetable. Palmerston is 20 km southeast and reads as its own town rather than a suburb of this one, with Durack, Bakewell, Rosebery and Zuccoli through the middle and a lot of four-bedroom houses built to be shared. Further on the rural area starts: Howard Springs, Humpty Doo, Girraween, Berry Springs. Acre blocks, sheds, mango trees, roughly 35 minutes in.
Buses work off four interchanges, Darwin city, Casuarina, Palmerston and Humpty Doo, with the first two doing most of the work. There is no suburban train and no tram. Rides are free across Greater Darwin at the moment while the Territory sorts out a new ticketing system. Services thin right out at night and on Sundays, so if a room sits out this way and you do not drive, look up the last bus home before you say yes to it.
Distance changes what the calendar does to you as well. People land for contracts and postings early in the year, so from about March the town fills and stays full through the Dry. The Wet, November to April, is the quiet end of it.
- Ask about the aircon before you ask about the furniture. Does the bedroom have its own unit, and how does the power get divided?
- Look underneath the house. On the older elevated places that space is the carport, the shed and the laundry, and its state tells you plenty.

You can cross the whole of this on foot, which is most of why it costs what it costs. For two months of the year you would rather not be outside for long.

Five minutes on from the CBD, with East Point at the end of the road. Much of the housing is older and elevated, and the room built in downstairs is usually the cheaper one in the house.
The northern suburbs

The foreshore is where the whole strip walks at sunset, but for much of the year people swim at the public pools rather than in the sea.

Newer and more spread out than Darwin proper, with a lot of four-bedroom houses built to be shared, and a drive in that only bites around eight in the morning.
The rural area

Blocks are measured in acres, a spare room can mean a granny flat or a converted shed, and plenty of places are on bore water rather than mains.

What is the build-up in Darwin?
October and November, between the Dry and the Wet. The humidity climbs and the storms mostly refuse to break, and everyone gets short with each other. It is the stretch that decides whether a room works, so ask what the bedroom does for airflow and cooling before you agree to it.
Why are the buses free in Darwin?
The Territory dropped fares across Greater Darwin and Alice Springs while it replaces the ticketing system, and the arrangement has been extended more than once. It is not billed as permanent. If a cheap run in from Palmerston is the thing making a room add up, keep that in mind.
Can you swim at the beach in Darwin?
Mostly no. Box jellyfish are around through the Wet and saltwater crocodiles are a year-round fact, so the beach is for walking. Swimming happens at the Nightcliff, Parap and Casuarina pools, at Lake Alexander by East Point, and in the lagoons at the Waterfront. Worth knowing which one a room is near.
How long is the drive from Palmerston to Darwin?
Twenty kilometres on the Stuart Highway, so twenty-odd minutes when the road is clear and closer to half an hour heading in around eight in the morning. Coming home in the evening is easier than going in. Buses run the same corridor, with the last one earlier than you might expect.
