Pickers from April, mill hands from June
Small crops build from about April — macadamias, avocados, sweet potato, tomatoes, capsicum, zucchini, citrus — and the sugar mills start crushing cane around June and run to roughly the end of the year. The town does not fill up all at once; it fills in two waves, and by mid-year both sets are here.
Much of that work arrives with a bed attached, in a hostel or a farm house. Plenty of people take it for a few weeks and then want out, so from about May the person asking about your spare room is usually already in town and working. If the job is out past the cane, a car or a standing lift matters more than the rent does, and it is worth settling that before you take a room.
January and February run the other way. The crush is finished, the small crops have not started, and it is hot and wet. That is the quiet stretch.
Not everyone renting here came for a season
Underneath all that there is a Bundaberg that stays the same size. The hospital is the biggest part of it, running shifts around the clock, with nursing and allied health staff on contracts that start and finish at odd times of year, out of step with the farms. The university campus and the TAFE add their own intake in February, mostly people after something cheap and close in.
Then the trades and the plants: the distillery, the drinks plant, the macadamia and small crop sheds, the building sites. Steady work, early starts, and a ute that wants somewhere off the street overnight.
Ask about shifts before you ask about anything else. A house with two nurses on nights runs on different hours from a house where everyone is up at four for the farm run.
Whose spare room you are actually taking
The reason there are spare rooms at all is the housing itself. Most of Bundaberg sits on the south bank of the Burnett — the CBD, the hospital, the high-set Queenslanders through Bundaberg South, East, Walkervale and Norville, and the newer streets at Kepnock, Kalkie and Avenell Heights. They are family houses with three and four bedrooms, and when a family shrinks the bedroom stays where it is. Bundaberg North, over the bridge, is quieter and a touch cheaper for much the same house. The city is flat and short across, so people ride; town buses run through the suburbs and out to Bargara and Burnett Heads on weekdays at fifty cents a trip, thin on Saturday and close to nothing on Sunday.
East of the cane it changes. Bargara, Innes Park, Coral Cove, Elliott Heads and Burnett Heads are retirement and holiday country, about thirteen kilometres from the CBD. A room there tends to come from an owner on their own in a house built for more people, and over the December and January school holidays some of that housing goes to holiday letting instead.
Bond in Queensland is four weeks rent, lodged with the Residential Tenancies Authority.

The old south and east
Bundaberg South, Bundaberg East, Walkervale, Norville, Svensson Heights
High-set Queenslanders with room underneath, mostly owned or rented by people who have been here a while. A grown-up child moves out and the bedroom goes up for rent.
Kepnock and the Bargara side
Kepnock, Kalkie, Avenell Heights, Windermere, Ashfield
Points you away from the CBD of a morning and back towards the coast of an afternoon, which suits anyone whose work is east of town and nobody else.
Across the river
Bundaberg North, Gooburrum, Sharon
A bridge between you and the centre, which takes a little off the rent, and Moore Park Beach ends up closer than the Bargara beaches.
West and southwest
Bundaberg West, Millbank, Branyan, Avoca
Bigger blocks on the Isis Highway side, and the part of town where a tradesperson's room is most likely to come with somewhere off-street for the ute.
The coastal strip
Bargara, Innes Park, Coral Cove, Elliott Heads, Burnett Heads
Retirees and holiday stock. Long-term rooms thin out over the December and January school holidays, then come back once the visitors go home.
North of the river mouth
Moore Park Beach, Welcome Creek, Yandaran
A good half hour each way into town. People take rooms out here because they want the beach, not because it suits the trip to work.

Does the sugar crush make Bundaberg rooms hard to get?
It tightens things up. The mills crush from around June to the end of the year, and small crops have been building since April, so by mid-year the town is at its fullest. January and February are the other end of it — the season is over, it is hot and wet, and there is far less competition.
Should I live in Bargara or in Bundaberg itself?
Depends what you want to be near. Bargara is about 13 km east, quieter, and dearer, and a lot of its housing is retirement or holiday stock, so long-term rooms there thin out over the December and January school holidays. Staying in town keeps you close to the hospital and the CBD, and it is flat enough to ride most places.
Does farm work around Bundaberg come with somewhere to stay?
Often it does — hostel and farm accommodation is common here and plenty of people arrive that way. A fair few move into an ordinary share house once they have a few weeks of work behind them and want their own door. Ask whether rent is coming out of your pay before you agree to anything.
Is Bundaberg North cheaper than the south side of the river?
Usually a little. Everything on the north side is a bridge away from the CBD, the hospital and most of the work, and that takes some pressure off the rent. You cross the bridge twice a day for it, and weekend buses are thin right across Bundaberg, not just over there.
