Most of Toowoomba runs off one street and three roads out of town. Work out which of them you will be using every morning, and the question of where to live mostly answers itself.

Ruthven Street is the spine, and the buses follow it
Almost everything in Toowoomba hangs off one north-south street. Ruthven runs the length of the city, West Street sits a couple of kilometres over, and the Translink buses stick to those two plus the run out through Wilsonton and Kearneys Spring. A trip is fifty cents, whatever the distance. They thin right out on Sundays and after dark, which is the thing to check against your roster before you say yes to a room.
On that spine nothing is far. Most of the city is fifteen minutes from the centre, and all three hospitals are a few minutes from it, which is why rooms in Newtown, North Toowoomba, Rockville and Mount Lofty tend to go to shift workers first.
West and south of the centre the land flattens out through Harristown, Kearneys Spring, Darling Heights and Glenvale, and that is the part of town you can ride a bike across. The university campus is out that way too. East of Ruthven the streets climb instead, older and leafier, running to the escarpment edge with Picnic Point at the end of them, and rent on that side is usually the higher of the two.
Three roads out, and what each one asks of you
The cheaper rooms are mostly outside the city, and each direction asks something different of you. North on the New England Highway is Highfields at about twenty minutes and Crows Nest at three quarters of an hour, colder again than the top of the range and with almost no bus service. East, the highway drops down the range to Withcott and Gatton, into warmer air near the Lockyer Valley farms; the climb back up in winter fog is the part people underestimate. West past the freight yards and the airport, the estates around Westbrook and Charlton are cheaper largely because everything out there assumes you drive.
Brisbane is a hundred and twenty-five kilometres away, ninety minutes to two hours depending on what the range is doing. Coaches run the route daily. There is no commuter train; the line through town carries freight and a long-distance service west, not people going to work. So the drive is the whole story here, and how far you are willing to do twice a day is what actually sets your rent.
Timing is simple enough. January and February are the tightest weeks, with the university year and new jobs starting together, so November or December is a calmer run at it. September is a different kind of busy, when the Carnival of Flowers fills short-stay beds and the town feels full.

East of Ruthven, up on the edge
East Toowoomba, Rangeville, Middle Ridge, Centenary Heights, Prince Henry Heights
The highest streets in the city, so the frost sits here longest and Picnic Point is a walk rather than a drive.
The flat side, west and south
Harristown, Kearneys Spring, Darling Heights, Glenvale
Level ground and close to the campus, so this is the part of Toowoomba you can cycle, and share houses turn over here more often than anywhere else.
North and central, near the hospitals
Newtown, North Toowoomba, Rockville, Wilsonton, Mount Lofty
All three hospitals are a few minutes away and the main bus corridors run through, which is why shift workers get first look at these streets.
North on the New England Highway
Highfields, Cabarlah, Meringandan, Crows Nest
Twenty minutes to three quarters of an hour up the road, a couple of degrees colder again, with the Cabarlah base right there and almost no bus service.
Down the range road
Withcott, Helidon, Gatton, Plainland
Dropping off the escarpment puts you in warmer air near the Lockyer Valley farms, but you own the climb back up in the morning fog.
West past the airport
Westbrook, Torrington, Charlton, Wellcamp
Newer estates out beyond the freight yards, where rent is lower mostly because everything out there assumes you drive.

How bad is the fog coming up the Toowoomba range?
Bad enough that people plan around it. The range road climbs several hundred metres in a few kilometres, and on winter mornings the cloud sits right in it, so a run up from Withcott or Gatton can take twice as long as the map suggests. If you are taking a cheaper room at the bottom, do the drive once at seven in the morning before you commit to it.
Do Toowoomba rentals actually have heating?
Some do, some do not, and it matters more here than it does closer to the coast. The city is about seven hundred metres up and gets real frosts through July, in houses that are often old and not insulated. Ask what the heating is, who pays to run it, and whether the room you are being shown is the one on the southern side of the house.
Is living in highfields worth it if I work in Toowoomba?
It depends what your mornings look like. Highfields is about twenty minutes north, the rent is usually a bit easier and you get more room for it. Against that, the bus service is close to nothing, it is colder again than the top of the range, and twenty minutes is twenty minutes each way every day. People with a car and a fixed start time cope with it fine. People on rotating shifts tend to move back into town.
Where do unisq students live in Toowoomba?
Mostly on the flat, west and south of the centre. The campus is at Darling Heights off West Street, so Kearneys Spring, Harristown and Darling Heights itself are the streets people walk or ride in from, and share houses there change hands more often than anywhere else in the city. Those pockets get picked over in late January and February.
