Who is already in the house
The University of Wollongong sits above the city at Gwynneville and Keiraville, and it is the single biggest reason rooms turn over here. The houses nearest it are older brick places on streets that climb fast, most of them carved into rooms years ago.
Wollongong Hospital is near the city centre, and health staff take a lot of the flats and shared apartments in town and at North Wollongong, where a rotating roster and a short walk home at eleven at night go together. South at Port Kembla the steelworks and the port do not stop, and the cheaper rooms at that end have held shift workers and contractors for decades. Maintenance shutdowns bring more of them in for a few weeks at a time.
- Ask what hours the rest of the house keeps. In a place shared by nurses and steelworkers, someone is always asleep at an odd time of day, and that suits some people and not others.
- Ask how long the room is free for. Near the campus a room can be offered only to the end of semester, which is fine if that is what you need.
The ones who kept a Sydney job
The city has the escarpment behind it and the ocean in front, with almost nowhere to spread inland, so it grew north and south instead. That matters most to the fourth group: the people who kept a Sydney job. Wollongong is about 85 kilometres south, roughly an hour and a half on the South Coast Line into Central, and plenty of people make that trip two or three days a week rather than five. Driving is no shortcut, since everything funnels up Mount Ousley.
Those people look near a station first, which is why the northern line behaves differently from the rest of town. Rents tend to climb the further north you go, even as you get further from the city, because that end is where the sea-change money went. West at Figtree and the heights above it there is no train, so a car stops being optional, and the rooms are cheaper and the houses bigger for it.
The year the university sets
Late January into March is when rooms move fastest, because the university restarts and a lot of people arrive in the same fortnight. Along the northern beaches there is a second squeeze over summer, when a house that would otherwise take a sharer goes to holidaymakers instead. Autumn and winter are the months when you get to be fussy, and that is also when a long walk uphill is worth testing before you agree to it.

Hospital staff and anyone who wants to walk home look here first. North Wollongong station, not Wollongong station, is the one near the beaches and the harbour, so check which one a listing actually means.
Under Mount Keira
Gwynneville, Keiraville, West Wollongong, Mangerton
The campus end of town. The streets run uphill fast, so a room that looks ten minutes from town on a map can be a twenty-minute walk home.
The northern line
Fairy Meadow, Towradgi, Corrimal, Woonona, Bulli, Thirroul, Austinmer
Where the Sydney commuters went, each suburb with a station a few minutes from the sand. Houses at this end also go to holidaymakers over summer, which thins out what is left for sharers.
West of the city
Figtree, Unanderra, Cordeaux Heights, Farmborough Heights
Rooms are cheaper and the houses bigger. Unanderra has its own station on the South Coast Line, but Figtree and the heights above it lean on a thin bus network, so a car helps.
The southern suburbs
Warrawong, Berkeley, Port Kembla, Lake Illawarra, Dapto
The cheapest rooms are down this end, and the closest ones to the shifts at the port. Port Kembla has a surf beach and a working steel port within a couple of streets of each other.

How far is the University of Wollongong from the city centre?
About three kilometres, up the hill through Gwynneville and Keiraville. The free Gong Shuttle loops between the campus, North Wollongong station and the city centre, so plenty of people who study or work there live nowhere near it. Walking down is easy and walking back is slower than the map suggests.
What's the difference between Wollongong and North Wollongong station?
They are a few minutes apart on the South Coast Line. North Wollongong is the one near the beaches and the harbour, and the one the Gong Shuttle runs from. Wollongong station sits just back from the Crown Street mall. A room described as near the station can mean either, so ask which.
Can you commute from Wollongong to Sydney every day?
You can, and some people do.
